Best Ionian islands in Greece

Introduction

We would review here the best Ionian islands in Greece. For those that do not know Greece basically has 3 sets of island groups:

  • Ionian
  • Aegean
  • Sporades

Yes it’s split by the oceans surrounding this beautiful Mediterranean country. In this one we will go over the Ionian islands which are my favorite. They offer more green than the Aegean islands and a slightly milder heat level. If you enjoy semi-tropical looks or little venice like scenery the Ionian islands are for you. Without trying to delay you too much I’ll try to summarize them. If you are in the process of assembling a list or trying to decide on one of the best Ioanian islands in Greece look no further I’ll try to break it down for you and provide you with useful information.

Kerkyra / Corfu

Corfu is one of the best Ionian islands in Greece, it’s also one of the most popular island of the Ionian water without discounting everything else. It offers an overall great experience with good variety of restaurants, scenery and places to stay at. The island has hints of Venetian, French and british heritage but also the building decoration and structures has it’s own unique taste. I highly recommend this to people with families or bigger groups that want convince.

Zakynthos / Zante

Home to one of the most iconic sceneries every the lost sank ship view. Zakynthos offers great beaches and accommodation and has traces of a lot of mountains and caves. You can enjoy it better in a lower tourism time between start to mid September but try not to overdue it to reach the end of September as the weather in Greece can change any time for the worst and your swimming holidays will turn into more of a fall like going out holiday which I’m sure will make you miss in the awesome beaches it has.

Ithaki

Ithaki is a unique Ionian island that is not very popular among tourists and the locals. This island has been the subject of a lot of Greek writers and philosophers and rightfully so. The island brings an appeal to those that prefer something more quiet and can find peace with themselves and nature. It is ideal for a more relaxed holiday but be prepared for a longer trip as it’s further out than the other Ionian islands. If you do make it there it will reward you with it’s amazing virgin scenery and stunning remote beaches.

Kefalonia

I left Kefalonia for last since it’s my personal favorite. Let me explain why. I believe Kefalonia combines everything the other islands have to offer maybe with the exception of the remote beaches of Ithaki but it also has one great benefit to it. It’s great cost on accomodation and food makes it ideal for those in a budget or bigger groups of people such as families. Kefalonia has really nice beaches, great food, a lot of things to explore and it’s super green. It may not have the reputation of Zakynthos and Corfu but I believe it’s the hidden gem of the Ionian islands.

Conclusion

If you decide to go to beautiful Greece you will certainly be rewarded one way or another, especially if you have never visited before but even if you have there are so many islands and places you can go too that you can literally never run out even if you live in the country. I recommend you start with the bigger islands initially to get familiar with Greece and have more outreach to things to do and then explore the less popular ones and find the hidden gems. Personally I love Santorini even though it’s very popular it’s still one of my favorite islands and I can go there over and over. What is your favorite place if you have already visited in Greece? If you haven’t which one would you consider going too? Happy vacationing! Hey and if you are in the mood for looking for food and are in the city area of Athens please don’t forget to check my Vouliagmeni upscale dinning guide and the Glyfada value restaurants.
