Good coffee places in Athens

Introduction

Lets talk about some good coffee places in Athens today. A well known fact among Greeks is that they value their coffee. I dare to say Greeks specialize in coffee variations so much that they are by far the best at it. Italians come pretty close with espressos and cappuccinos but when it’s about a ice cold coffee you can’t look any further than Greece. This article however is not so much about the quality of the coffee you get but mainly about the location too. The environment plays an important role to someone wanting to enjoy a good cup of coffee and depending on where you live you get different experiences. Let me break down this based on central locations within Athens where you can go and enjoy a good cup of coffee.

Sounio

This may be a very peculiar first location as it’s literally at the most southern part of Attica and it may be quite a bit of a drive to get there but I can safely guarantee you the stunning views of the ocean at a height is amazing. The quality is average to medium of the coffee itself. I would recommend going with a goto Greek coffee like a fredo frappucino here and enjoy the view of the waves hitting the rocks of the Sounio cliff. Hey and if you have time make sure to check out the temple of Poseidon.

Plaka

Plaka is one of the most graphic neighborhoods of Athens as it’s home to a lot of preserved houses built back in time and give out an island like vibe combined with the ancient runes it’s definitely a place to enjoy a coffee at. Here you’d find a lot of different cafeterias but my favorite ones are by far the ones in the graphic street itself in particular Klepsidra cafe and go for a traditional Greek coffee.

Vouliagmeni

This is more of a brunch place but most Greeks go to it for coffee in the mornings. At the evening it turns into a full blown restaurant. In En Plo you can find all the typical coffees but here you’d enjoy more of a beach like vibe in your coffee. Unlike the Sounio cafe’s En Plo is closer to Athens and has more of a variation of things to do once you finish, for example the lake surrounded by hills near it is a fun place to visit. In En Plo they offer a lot of different twists for coffee but I like to get here a mocha and add some fresh cream over it sit back and relax and let the ocean absorb my thoughts.

Conclusion

Pick your version as they say or even better pick your black pitched coffee! To me it really comes down to mood, it’s all about the environment I’m going to be in. If I feel like going closer to the beach side I’ll pick a coffee place there, if I feel going to the center I’ll do that. Coffee is important but I mostly care about location and vibes. If you are hungry though and you are willing to explore for food please read my article on good restaurants in Glyfada. What is your preference? Have you been to any of the places above? If not can you tell me of some secretly cool locations to go too and add to my list?
