They solve the same problem — keeping soil consistently moist without you standing there with a watering can — but they work on completely different principles, cost different amounts, and fail in different ways.

  3. Run the 3mm supply tubing from the reservoir down to your pots. Keep tubing runs as short as possible — every extra foot of tubing adds friction and reduces flow to distant pots.

Troubleshooting the Most Common Failures

With Blumat, air bubbles are enemy number one. If a pot suddenly stops getting water, disconnect the supply tube at the carrot, submerge the tube end in water, and re-attach it underwater. This purges the air lock. Prevent bubbles by keeping the reservoir full — when the water level drops below the tube outlet, air enters the line. Some growers add a small float valve from a toilet fill kit to auto-refill the bucket from an indoor tap, which also solves the “forgot to refill” problem.

With drip, uneven watering across pots at different elevations is the most persistent headache. Pots on the ground floor of a tiered shelf get more pressure (and more water) than pots on the top shelf. Pressure-compensating emitters (like Netafim’s PC drippers) deliver a consistent flow rate regardless of pressure variations and cost only marginally more than standard adjustable emitters. They’re worth the upgrade for any multi-level balcony setup.

Both systems struggle with freezing temperatures. If you garden on a balcony in USDA zones 6 or below, drain all lines and bring Blumat carrots indoors (stored in water) before the first hard frost. Drip lines left with water in them will crack when ice expands.
