The 10% Step-Up Lie in Education Planning
Stop trusting the spreadsheet linear progression
I looked at a financial plan last Tuesday that was practically screaming for a reality check. It was a classic setup: a couple with a 5-year-old kid, looking to build a massive corpus for college in 15 years. The target? A cool ₹2.6 Crore. The method? A ₹30,000 monthly SIP split evenly between Flexi Cap, Mid Cap, and Small Cap funds, with a 10% annual step-up.
On paper, the math is beautiful. It’s clean. It works. And if you punch these numbers into Python — I used a quick script with NumPy just this morning — assuming a 12-15% return, you hit that target. Easy.
But here’s the thing: spreadsheets don’t have emotions, and they definitely don’t pay tuition fees. Actually, I should clarify — while the math looks solid, this plan has some major pitfalls that are easy to overlook.
The “Aggressive” Allocation Trap
The plan calls for a 33% split each into Flexi, Mid, and Small Cap funds. That is incredibly aggressive. We are talking about a portfolio that is 100% equity, with a heavy tilt towards high-beta assets.
I’m not saying don’t do it. For a 15-year horizon, you need equity to beat education inflation (which is running closer to 11-12% right now, not the CPI’s 5-6%). But you need to understand what that ride feels like. And in my experience, most parents panic when they see their portfolio value drop 20% — even if the long-term projections still look great.
The 10% Step-Up is Harder Than It Sounds
This is the part that bugs me the most about standard advice. “Just increase your SIP by 10% every year.” Well, let’s play that out:
- Year 1: ₹30,000/month (₹3.6L/year)
- Year 5: ₹43,900/month (₹5.2L/year)
- Year 10: ₹70,700/month (₹8.5L/year)
- Year 15: ₹1.13 Lakh/month (₹13.6L/year)
By the time your kid is 19, you need to be investing over ₹1.1 Lakh per month just for this one goal. But income doesn’t always grow linearly, and I’ve seen very few clients actually sustain a 10% step-up past year 7 without compromising other priorities.
My “Sequence of Returns” Stress Test
I wasn’t satisfied with the linear projection, so I ran a stress test on this specific 15-year plan. And the results were eye-opening. I simulated a scenario where the market performs well for the first 12 years, but then hits a prolonged bear phase in years 13, 14, and 15 — right when you need to withdraw the money for fees.
The Result: Instead of ₹2.6 Crore, the corpus shrank to roughly ₹1.8 Crore right at the maturity date. That’s an ₹80 Lakh hole in the plan. Why? Because in the final years, your corpus is huge. A 20% drop on a ₹2 Crore portfolio wipes out ₹40 Lakhs instantly.
Education Inflation is a Different Beast
The target is ₹2.6 Crore because the current cost is ₹50 Lakhs. That implies an inflation assumption of roughly 11-12%. And sadly, yes, that is realistic based on the fee structures I’ve seen at premier private universities in India.
What I’d Do Instead
If I were advising this couple, I’d tell them to stop obsessing over the ₹2.6 Crore number and focus on the process. A few key things I’d recommend:
1. The “Step-Up” Hack: Tie the step-up to bonuses, not a fixed 10%. Commit 50% of every raise or bonus to this fund. It’s psychologically easier to invest “found money” than to squeeze your monthly cash flow tighter.
2. The Mid-Term Review: Don’t set and forget. Review the asset allocation in Year 7 and Year 12. If the Mid and Small caps have had a massive run-up, book some profits. Rebalancing adds alpha and sleep.
3. Insurance is Non-Negotiable: With a goal this far out, the biggest risk isn’t the market; it’s the earner. Term insurance must cover the future value of this goal.
Planning for 15 years out is guessing. The best plan isn’t the one with the highest projected number; it’s the one you can stick to when the market is tanking and your AC just broke.
