Stop Trying to be 100% Zero Waste
Three years ago, I had a confession – I tried to fit an entire year’s worth of household trash into a single glass mason jar. I’d seen a YouTuber do it, and it looked incredibly satisfying.
But it lasted exactly three weeks.
By day 22, I found myself standing in my kitchen at 11 PM, guiltily hiding a plastic spinach container at the bottom of my recycling bin like contraband. The mental overhead of tracking every single piece of packaging, driving across town for bulk dry goods, and making my own toothpaste had completely fried my brain. I was miserable.
We treat eco-friendly living exactly like crash dieting. And we go entirely off the deep end. But intensity is the enemy of longevity. If your environmental habits make your day-to-day life harder to manage, you will eventually abandon them.
Willpower is a Terrible Strategy
The biggest mistake I made early on was relying on my own memory and discipline to save energy. I was constantly walking around turning off lights, unplugging appliances, and yelling at my family about the thermostat. It was exhausting.
Technology is much better at being consistent than we are. Instead of trying to change human behavior, I started automating the baseline.
I’m currently running Home Assistant 2026.2 on a basic Raspberry Pi 4 with a Zooz Z-Wave stick. I spent one annoying weekend in January tracking down phantom power loads across my house. Turns out my older Yamaha AV receiver was pulling nearly 45 watts while completely “off.” My desktop monitors were pulling another 15W.
I threw a few cheap Z-Wave smart plugs on those specific outlets and wrote a basic automation that physically cuts their power when the house goes into sleep mode. That single, boring afternoon of work dropped my overnight baseline grid draw from 420W to just 185W. I don’t have to remember to do anything. It just happens.
The Smart Home “Gotcha” Nobody Mentions
You have to be careful not to over-optimize, though. Systems can and will fight each other if you aren’t paying attention.
Here is a specific headache that cost me money last month. If you have a central HVAC system managed by an Ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium (specifically running the newer 4.8.x firmware) and you also use localized ductless mini-splits in certain rooms, they will go to war with each other.
Ecobee has an automated feature that aggressively allows the house temperature to drift by a few degrees to save energy during peak hours. Sounds great on paper. But when the central system let the hallway drop to 64 degrees, the Mitsubishi mini-split in my office detected the cold air bleeding under the door. It immediately spun its compressor up to maximum to compensate.
My total energy usage actually spiked 14% over a two-week period. The central system was “saving” energy while forcing the mini-split to work twice as hard. I ended up disabling the automated temperature swings entirely. Sometimes a dumb, static temperature hold is vastly more efficient than two smart systems trying to outsmart each other.
Focus on the Heavy Hitters
We spend way too much time agonizing over the wrong things. People will buy a $40 reusable metal straw set but ignore the fact that their attic has R-10 insulation and is leaking heat like a sieve.
If you want to build a sustainable lifestyle that doesn’t burn you out, ignore the performative stuff. Look at the data.
1. Fix your food waste
Throwing away food is arguably the dumbest and most carbon-intensive thing we do regularly. You’re wasting the water, transport emissions, and packaging for absolutely zero benefit. I stopped buying fresh produce for “aspirational” meals I was too tired to cook. I buy frozen vegetables for weeknights now. They don’t rot in the crisper drawer when I inevitably decide to order a pizza on a Tuesday.
2. Seal the envelope
Before you even look at solar panels or heat pumps, buy a $30 thermal leak detector. Walk around your house on a cold night. I found a massive draft coming through the recessed lighting fixtures in my ceiling. Three cans of spray foam insulation did more for my winter heating bill than replacing my entire furnace would have.
3. Stop buying cheap garbage
This is the hardest one because Amazon makes it so easy. But buying a $15 toaster that breaks in eleven months and goes into a landfill is worse than spending $60 on one that lasts a decade. Buy fewer things, but make them hurt your wallet just enough that you actually take care of them.
The Boring Reality
I still use plastic trash bags. I occasionally forget my reusable grocery totes and have to use the paper ones at the store. But my house uses half the energy it did three years ago. My food waste is nearly zero. And most importantly, I don’t think about it constantly anymore. The habits and automations just run in the background of my life.
You don’t need to fit your trash in a jar. You just need to build a system you won’t quit in a month.
